RMIS Traceability Alignment

Agribantu doesn't replace the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) national traceability framework or GS1 South Africa standards — it participates as a compliant recordkeeping system alongside them, so data captured on a farm can mean the same thing to the next system down the chain.

Audience: regulators, auditors, integration partners

Livestock traceability only works if a location, an animal, and an event mean the same thing no matter which system recorded them. RMIS sets that shared language for South Africa's red meat industry. This page describes where Agribantu already speaks it, and where that integration is still being built.

Strategic posture

Agribantu is an operational capture, accountability and compliance platform. It aligns with the RMIS national traceability infrastructure and GS1 South Africa standards rather than competing with them — the goal is for data captured on a farm, at an auction, or at an abattoir to be usable by the wider industry chain, not locked inside one app.

That alignment rests on three principles RMIS itself is built around:

  • Trust — every data action is visible and audited; authority access is explicit, never implicit.
  • Options — producers can use Agribantu or interoperate with other recordkeeping systems; data is never captive to one platform.
  • Data utility — captured data returns value to the farmer, the authority, and the value chain, not just to whoever collected it.

Location identity (GLN)

RMIS assigns a GS1 Global Location Number (GLN) to every significant red-meat supply-chain location — farms, auction houses, feedlots and abattoirs. Each is geofenced, and the GLN links to disease reporting, biosecurity, stock theft and animal welfare auditing at a national level.

Agribantu issues and manages GLNs against the real GS1 13-digit format with a modulo-10 check digit, alongside regional identifier types (PIC, farm number, abattoir code, auction code, feedlot code, and others) for locations that use a different regional scheme. Every GLN moves through an audited lifecycle:

AmendedThe underlying facts changed (e.g. reissued GLN, new issuing authority) — retires the old record and starts a new one from Pending, rather than quietly editing it.
RetiredThe location has permanently stopped participating in traceability. Historical records that reference it remain intact.

The GGID data envelope

RMIS defines the minimum traceability data every event should carry as GGID:

  • GLN — the location identifier
  • GPS coordinate — physical location at the time of the event
  • ID number — the animal or group identifier
  • Date and time — when the event occurred

Every event and movement captured in Agribantu carries this envelope: the resolved GLN of the holding, GPS coordinates where available, the animal's active identifier, and a timestamp — plus where the data came from, so a regulator or auditor can always tell whether a record was captured directly, imported from another system, or reconciled against an authority reference. For movements, the same envelope extends to carry both the origin and destination GLN, so a full chain of custody — location A to location B to location C — can be traced end to end.

Animal identity

RMIS calls for a universal digital numbering system for each animal, independent of whatever hardware technology is used to read it, ultimately resolving to a GS1 GTIN or SGTIN. Agribantu supports the full range of identifier technologies in use across South African farms today — low-frequency and ultra-high-frequency RFID, visual ear tags, brands, microchips, tattoos, QR codes, and GS1 GTIN/SGTIN — so producers are never forced onto one hardware vendor to participate.

Underneath all of them, an animal's permanent identity in Agribantu doesn't depend on any one tag. Tags can be retired and replaced as hardware changes without orphaning the animal's event history — the tag is a record attached to the animal, not the animal's identity itself.

Working with other systems

RMIS is explicit that livestock data is decentralised across multiple recordkeeping systems, and that no single platform should expect to own it all. Agribantu is built around that reality rather than against it: every event and movement can declare where it actually came from — captured directly in Agribantu, imported from another recordkeeping system, or reconciled against an authority or RMIS/GS1 reference — so provenance is always honest, never assumed.

Current integration status

Some of this alignment is live in the product today; some is infrastructure being built toward direct national-system integration. We'd rather say that plainly than round it up.

Agribantu is not replacing RMIS or GS1. It's built to participate as a compliant, decentralised recordkeeping system alongside them — direct sync integration is the next layer on top of an already-compliant data model, not a prerequisite for the compliance itself.
